Rename files using several columns
Last updated .
Product photos, scanned forms, exported assets: their final names often come from more than one column — a SKU, a colour, a view. Mass Rename can build each new file name from several columns at once with a small template, so you do not have to concatenate anything by hand in the spreadsheet.
Build the name from several columns
Add the files and a sheet that has one column per part of the new name — for example SKU, Color and View. In the New name column dropdown, pick Build from several columns…. The template box opens with a clickable chip for each column header plus a {n} chip. Type a template such as {SKU}_{Color}_{View}; the text between braces is copied as-is and each column is filled in per row.
As you type, a live example shows how the first data row renders, and the full preview below updates for every row. The file's original extension is always kept — you only describe the name, not the extension.
A worked example
SKU Color View → new name
AB123 red front → AB123_red_front.jpg
AB123 blue back → AB123_blue_back.jpg
AB124 red front → AB124_red_front.jpg
Add {n} to number the rows, e.g. {SKU}_{Color}_{n}, and {n:3} to pad the number to three digits. Modifiers tidy up individual columns: {Color:lower} lowercases a column and {Name:slug} turns a free-text value into a safe slug. Use {old} to keep the current name and add something new, and write {{ and }} for literal braces.
If a row has an empty cell, that row is flagged as an error in the preview so you can fix it before renaming — nothing is renamed half-blind. Turn on Allow empty cells to drop the empty value and its separators instead.
Questions about combining columns
What does a template like {SKU}_{Color} actually do?
It replaces each {Column} with that row's value and joins them with the text between them. So a row with SKU AB1 and Color red becomes AB1_red, and the file's original extension is added back automatically.
How do I number the files in the template?
Add {n} anywhere, for example {SKU}_{n}. It counts the valid data rows from 1, and {n:3} pads the number to three digits so the folder sorts correctly.
What happens if a row has an empty cell?
By default that row is marked as an error in the preview and skipped, so you can fix it before renaming. Turn on Allow empty cells to drop the empty value and the separators around it instead.
Can it keep part of the original file name?
Yes. Use {old} to insert the current name without its extension, so a template like {old}_{Color} keeps the original name and adds the colour you mapped from another column.
How many files can I rename at once for free?
The free tier covers 50 files per batch, the same limit as every other mode. Exporting the name list and previewing are always free; unlocking raises the limit for larger folders.
