Rename photos by the date they were taken

Point Mass Rename at a folder of photos and it renames each one from the camera's EXIF date taken — 2026-05-01_132211.jpg instead of IMG_4821.jpg. It runs entirely in your browser: the photos are never uploaded.

Open photos-by-date mode →

How it works

  1. Open the tool and choose Rename photos by date taken.
  2. Add the folder (subfolders optional) or drop the photos in.
  3. Check the new names in the preview, then click Rename in a local folder.

The default name is {DateTaken}, which becomes 2026-05-01_132211.jpg. You can add the camera ({Camera}), the original name ({old}) or a running number ({n}). Photos taken in the same second are numbered automatically.

iPhone photos and HEIC files

Photos from an iPhone are usually HEIC. The date taken sits in the same EXIF block, so a HEIC file renames exactly like a JPEG — IMG_4821.HEIC becomes 2026-05-01_132211.HEIC, keeping its original extension. A screenshot or an edited copy that has no date taken keeps its name by default, or you can fall back to the file's modified date. Everything is read on your device; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked

How do I rename photos by the date they were taken?

Open the tool in photos-by-date mode, add the folder, and click Rename in a local folder. Each photo is renamed from its EXIF date taken, for example 2026-05-01_132211.jpg. Nothing is uploaded.

What happens to photos that have no date taken?

By default they keep their current name. You can switch to using the file's modified date instead.

What about photos taken in the same second?

Automatic numbering is on in this mode, so a burst that lands on the same second becomes 2026-05-01_132211.jpg, 2026-05-01_132211_1.jpg and so on.

Does it read my location data?

No. Only the date taken, camera make and model are read. GPS is never read, and the photo files never leave your device.

Does renaming change the photo dates?

No. Files are moved in place, not copied, so the created and modified dates stay the same.
